The four rules

What every kitchen we plan comes back to.

Cozy sage green kitchen nook with decorated open shelves

01

Cabinets Before Walls

Cabinet color covers more visual area than any other decision in the kitchen, and it is the hardest to change. Wall paint, hardware and lighting all bend to it, never the reverse.

Every kitchen guide here starts from the same order: lock the cabinet color first, then choose everything else to sit beside it.

02

Light in Layers

One ceiling fixture flattens a kitchen into a corridor. Task light over worktops, warm pendants over islands and a low glow for evenings give the same room three moods.

Judge the kitchen after dark before you call it done. Most kitchens are designed at noon and lived in at seven.

03

One Hardworking Focus

An island, a range wall or a sink wall carries the room. Give it the stone, the color or the light, and keep everything else quieter.

Two focal points argue. One focal point organizes the whole kitchen around itself.

04

Storage You Reach Without Thinking

Daily dishes live between knee and shoulder near the dishwasher. Anything else is a workout you will resent within a month.

Open shelves earn their place only for the beautiful everyday. Everything else belongs behind doors.

Where to go next

Green Kitchen Cabinet Ideas

03

Dark and Moody Kitchen Ideas

moody is a lighting budget, not a paint color

04

Kitchen Island Ideas

clearances decide the size, not desire

05

Farmhouse Sink Ideas

you are buying cabinet surgery, not a basin

Open Shelving Kitchen Ideas

a display contract, not storage — sign knowingly

07

Butler Pantry and Scullery Ideas

name the program before the finish

08

Marble and Stone Countertop Kitchens

sealer cannot stop chemistry

09

Wood Kitchen Cabinet Ideas

blame the stain, never the species

Farmhouse Kitchen Ideas

three real materials beat ten signals

11

Rustic and Country Kitchen Ideas

earn the wear, never buy it distressed

12

Breakfast Nook and Kitchen Window Ideas

traffic kills nooks faster than cushions

14

White Kitchen Ideas

warmth is the whole job, not an accessory

15

volume punishes standard sizes

one real thing beats ten old-looking ones
